KM Malta Airlines Uniform Upgrade

The new Maltese flag carrier, KM Malta Airlines, has unveiled a range of new uniform accessories for its crew members, a year after taking over operations from Air Malta.

The new pieces were designed and created by Maltese fashion house Charles & Ron, which was “entrusted with breathing new life into the airline’s visual identity.”

The new range includes ties, scarves, handbags, belts and hats, with different scarf and tie designs to distinguish between pilots, cabin crew and in-flight managers.

Charles & Ron have preserved the airline’s and its predecessor’s traditional navy and red colour scheme. However, a fresh light blue, with a tinge of grey, was introduced, which Ron describes as a beautiful ‘sky colour ‘.

KM Malta Airlines said the traditional square scarves and men’s ties feature similar patterns, creating a cohesive look across the crew. At the same time, the updated navy blue and red hats offer a “fresh look” to the whole ensemble.

Special attention has been paid to functionality. The new handbag, for example, is designed to be slightly larger than the crew’s previous one, making it more practical.

At the heart of the design is the eight-pointed Maltese cross, which features prominently in the accessories’ graphic elements, “creating an immediate visual connection to Malta’s heritage” without overwhelming the overall look. The airline added that engaging a local fashion house was part of its “commitment to showcasing home-grown talent.”

“It’s an honour,” Ron reflected. “As a brand, we’ve always embraced Malta and taken our history and origins on our journey. Being part of the legacy of the airline is absolutely a part of this story.”

The designers said that while researching the new uniform, they “looked to other airlines for inspiration but remained firmly anchored in Malta’s identity”. They noted the contrast between the avant-garde designs adopted by some carriers and Malta’s more traditional approach, aiming to ‘find the middle ground’ that prioritises wearability and comfort.

Ron described the result as “uncomplicated, simple and pleasing,” yet effective in brightening the current uniforms.
