A 21-year-old passenger has been charged after allegedly grabbing and shaking a Jetstar cabin crew member who refused his request for a hug before allegedly attacking another passenger during an international flight to Australia.
A routine flight from Phuket, Thailand, to Melbourne turned into a frightening ordeal for passengers and crew after Australian Federal Police (AFP) alleged that a young man assaulted both a member of the cabin crew and a fellow traveller while the aircraft was in the air.
According to the AFP, the incident took place on Jetstar flight JQ18 on April 1, 2026. Details have only now emerged after the 21-year-old Victorian man was formally charged and appeared before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court.
Police allege the man became aggressive after asking a crew member for a hug. When she declined, he allegedly grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her.
The AFP further alleges that he then walked to the rear of the aircraft and repeatedly punched another male passenger in the face after the man emerged from the aircraft lavatory.
The crew quickly intervened, restraining the passenger and informing the flight deck of the escalating situation. The captain requested police assistance, and Australian Federal Police officers met the aircraft immediately after it landed safely in Melbourne, where the passenger was arrested.
The man has been charged with one count of assaulting the crew of an aircraft, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment under Australian law, as well as one count of common assault. The allegations have not yet been tested in court.
AFP Superintendent Stephen Cook said passengers and airline employees should never have to fear violence while travelling.
“The AFP has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the assault or mistreatment of passengers or cabin crew, and anyone who commits such an offence can expect to be prosecuted,” he said.
Sadly, disruptive passengers are nothing new, although incidents involving the alleged physical assault remain relatively uncommon. However, situations like this demonstrate just how quickly what appears to be an awkward or inappropriate interaction can escalate into a serious safety incident.
Despite crew receiving extensive training in conflict management, de-escalation and passenger restraint, every situation is different. In this case, the crew’s swift intervention prevented the disturbance from escalating further and allowed the aircraft to continue safely to its destination.
