A 23-year-old Virgin Atlantic aircraft engineer has died after suffering serious injuries in a maintenance accident at London Heathrow Airport. The airline has paid tribute to its “much-loved” colleague as investigations into the incident continue.
A young Virgin Atlantic aircraft engineer has tragically died after suffering serious injuries in a workplace accident while carrying out maintenance on one of the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners at London Heathrow Airport.
Georgie Buxton, 23, had been in intensive care for several weeks following the incident before his life support was withdrawn earlier this month.
Virgin Atlantic confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, describing Georgie as a “much-loved member” of its engineering team.
“Our thoughts are firmly with Georgie’s family, loved ones, friends and colleagues at this incredibly sad and challenging time,” the airline said. “We’re providing support to loved ones wherever we can and sharing our heartfelt condolences to everyone affected.”
The accident happened while Georgie was working on a Boeing 787 during routine maintenance at Heathrow. While media reports have suggested he was critically injured after machinery fell on him, the exact circumstances of the incident have not yet been officially confirmed as investigations continue. Virgin Atlantic said it is working closely with the relevant authorities and Boeing to establish exactly what happened.
Out of respect for those involved, the airline said it would not be providing any further details while the investigation remains ongoing.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues across the aviation industry. Georgie had joined Virgin Atlantic around two years ago after previously working as an aircraft technician for Ryanair, proudly announcing at the time that he was looking forward to developing his engineering career on new aircraft types.
Although cabin crew and pilots are often the public face of an airline, every flight depends on the dedication of hundreds of people working behind the scenes.
